    Diflufenican is a synthetic chemical belonging to the group carboxamide. It has a role as a xenobiotic, a herbicide and a carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor. It is an aromatic ether, a member of (trifluoromethyl)benzenes and a pyridinecarboxamide. It acts as residual and foliar herbicide that can be applied pre-emergence and post-emergence. Diflufenican is a contact, selective herbicide used to specifically control some broad leaved weeds, like Stellaria media (Chickweed), Veronica Spp (Speedwell),  Viola spp , Geranium spp (Cranesbill) and Laminum spp (Dead nettles). The mode of action of diflufenican is a bleaching action, due to the inhibition of carotenoid biosynthesis, theregy preventing photosynthesis and leading to plant death. It is most commonly applied on clover-based pastures, field peas, lentils, and lupins. It has been shown to produce effects on the membranes of sensitive plant tissues which may be independent of its inhibition of carotenoid synthesis. Diflufenican remains effective for several weeks if there is sufficient soil moisture. The compound is stable in solution and against the effects of light and temperature. It is preferably used in autumn as a herbicide for winter cereals

    It has been approved for use on barley, durum wheat, rye, triticale and wheat. It can be used in combination with isoproturon or other cereal herbicides.

    Diflufenican has a low aqueous solubility and a low volatility. It may be moderately persistent in soil systems depending on local conditions. It can also be very persistem in aquatic systems depending on local conditions. Based on its physico-chemical properties it is not expected to leach to groundwater. It demonstrates a high toxicity to algae, a moderate toxicity to other aquatic organisms, birds and eathworms. It has a low toxicity to honeybees. Diflufenican also has a low toxicity to mammals if ingested and is thought to be an eye irritant.
